Father suspected to kill son over shs500

Onacklet Agaba, a 46-year-old resident of Kazirankye village in the Northern ward of Kanungu town council, has been identified as the father of the deceased, Ivan Nuwagaba, a 10-year-old student at Karuhinda Primary School.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, Agaba is suspected to have murdered his son for having refused to return shs500 off cigarette balance. Maate explained that on June 28, at around 10:00 a.m. the suspect sent his son to purchase cigarettes worth shs1,000.

However, the son reportedly returned with cigarettes worth shs500 and is said to have consumed the remaining balance which angered the father. Following several threats from the father towards his son, the latter started avoiding his father, severally running away from him.

On July 2, 2023, at around 1:00 p.m, at Kanyangyende village in the Northern ward of Kanungu town council, Nuwagaba’s lifeless body was found hanging on a mango tree, with a rope tied around its neck in what seemed to be suicide.

However, sources within the police intimated that the rope was too loose and the feet were touching the ground, an indication that someone had killed the young boy, later staging the scene to look like suicide.

Agaba was arrested pending a postmortem report and further inquries vide CRB 455/2023, registered as a murder case.
