UWEC doubles entry charges to support Animal welfare

The management of the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) has made changes in the entry fees to improve the visitor experience and support animal welfare efforts effective July 1, 2024.

This was revealed by Dr. James Musinguzi the UWEC Executive Director on Wednesday, during the press briefing held at Entebbe Zoo.

The revisions to the entry fees are aimed at ensuring the continued care of UWEC’s diverse animal species, while also improving the overall experience of visitors.

Dr. Musinguzi highlighted that the decision to adjust the fees was not an easy one, but it was necessary due to the changing costs of animal food, fuel, and other overheads.

“These adjustments reflect our commitment to providing exceptional care for our animals, maintaining a world-class facility, and supporting vital conservation education initiatives,” he said.

He also noted that UWEC has not increased entry fees for Ugandan and East African visitors in over 10 years.

“The rates for international visitors have been adjusted in the past, both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dr. Musinguzi noted.

During the same media engagement, the UWEC boss also pointed out several of the renovations and upgrades being carried out at the centre including new exhibit structures, modernizing the hospital, gate upgrades, shades, modernizing the parking yard, two brand new toilets to enhance hygiene, CCTV cameras to improve security of the facility, two brand new tractors, a mobile conservation education van, sculpture placing from the Airport to Mpala along the Entebbe – Kampala road among others.

“Such developments are as a result of a shs14bn loan from the World Bank negotiated by the government of Uganda and as we talk now the project is at 60% completion,” he said.

UWEC, popularly known as Entebbe Zoo, functions as a conservation education centre, a rehabilitation centre and a recreation centre where people come to see a variety of wild animals, birds and plant species.
