After finishing the first phase of the six classrooms block, the Rotarians handed over the two classrooms building to Kitala Secondary School in Katabi Town Council.
The donation was spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Garuga and Bwebajja and the block is estimated to cost over shs500m at its completion.
The handover of the school block was held on Thursday 27th June at the school in Kitala, Katabi Town Council – Wakiso district, and commissioned by Emmanuel Katongole, the former District Governor for Rotary District 9211 (Tanzania and Uganda) who is also known as a Ugandan statistician, economist, businessman, entrepreneur, and industrialist.
While handing over the classroom block, Emmanuel Katongole said that after touring around the school time back, he realized that it has several classrooms just behind the administration block that are made up of papyrus where students were learning.
“When we first visited the school, the laboratory, and its bunsen banners plus everything was in a papyrus building, this touched me and also reminded me where I came from,” he said.
Katongole also committed to serving as an ambassador of the school as well as looking for organizations for more support so that the school’s standards go up.
He concluded with Nelson Mandela’s quote “In life it doesn’t matter what kind of life you have lived whether it’s higher or law, but what matters is the difference you have made in the life of others,” therefore let us continue making a difference and creating hope in the world.
Francisco Ssemwanga the Rotary Governor appreciated the Rotary clubs of Garuga and Bwebajja for spearheading the construction of this structure as well as other individuals who have given a hand in making the donation a success.
“We are hoping to continue with other phases to see that we can provide more accommodation for the students to learn,” he highlighted.
Ssemwanga also lauds the headteacher and the school administration for their good stewardship as well as the acceptance to partner with Rotary.
“I really like your character that when you saw Rotary coming in to give you a push, you said yes these are the people I need in terms of raising the little you can afford as the school to partner with us, so we thank the board members and the school administration for being part of the project,” he added.
The Katabi Town Council chairperson Ronald Kalema appreciated Rotarians for the great wonderful project they have installed to the school, saying that it has indeed added value to the school.
“When the headteacher had just come in, we bought land behind the administration block and he improvised with papyrus classrooms, it always made me ashamed but I could do nothing so I thanked Rotarians that came here and got touched and did service above self,” he noted.
Joseph Luswata the school headteacher thanked the Rotary clubs of Garuga and Bwebajja for uplifting the school’s face through this donation.
“The school didn’t have a prestigious classroom block like this one, so we thank you so much Rotary for considering Kitala Secondary School,” he noted.
The headteacher also appreciated the foundation body of the school which is Katabi Town Council for the support, plan approvals, and positive consultations saying that there was no single coin charged to them for plans and all other construction documents.
Kitala Secondary School is the only government-aided school in Katabi Town Council and it was started by the community in 2008.
