Jallow Abilie’s early goal was all debutante, Gambia needed to claim a well deserved 1-0 victory against Mauritania in the African Cup of Nations on Wednesday.
Mauritania found the first chance to take the lead as early as the fourth minute through Abubakar Kamara but his effort from close range waved away from goal.
Six minutes later, Gambia took the lead through Jallow who smashed a powerful shot in the back of the net after a composed control a step away from the box.
Mauritania nearly replied through Pape Ibnou Ba after raising the highest in the mix but his effort sailed on top of the net hence burrying a golden chance.
Seven minutes into the second stanza, Omar Colley met with Ebrima Colley’s cross but his powerful header from close range missed the target by a whisker.
Gambia’s narrow win takes them levelled with Mali who also have three points and one goal while Tunisia and Mauritania sit at the bottom of the group log.
It was a great show for Tom Sainfiet charges displayed a great show in their first show at the big stage and for them it will be golden three points bagged.
