Uganda Prison Services assistant spokesperson, Moses Ssentalo confirmed on Monday a road accident involving a Uganda Prisons TATA lorry Registration No. UG 0363U transporting prisoners and prison staff.
The incident occurred while the prisoners were from collecting firewood at around 09: 00am along Kampala-Gulu highway at Nalongo in Luweero district.
Ssentalo confirmed five of the prisoners lost their lives in this accident and their bodies were conveyed to Kasaana Hospital mortuary in Luweero.
Ssentalo also revealed that a joint team of health workers from Kasaana hospital and prisons quickly intervened and provided the necessary medical interventions to the staff and prisoners who sustained injuries.
“Reports attribute the cause of the accident to a saloon Toyota Wish Registration No. UBG 587W which had a tire burst and lost control as it was approaching the prisons lorry from the opposite direction before ramming into the prison truck,
“Further investigations surrounding this incident have commenced and more details to follow soon.” he said
Moses Ssentalo concluded by giving a word of condolences to the families of the deceased.
