2022 CECAFA Women’s Championship to kickoff today

The 2022 CECAFA women’s championship will kickoff today at FUFA technical center in Njeru.

After dropping out for almost three years due to the notorious Covid-19 pandemic, the tournament has returned with a total of eight teams. These are Uganda , Tanzania, Zanzibar,South Sudan, Burundi,Rwanda , Djibouti and Ethiopia.

The championship that will run up to 11th June 2022 will be kicked off by two games in group A as Djibouti will take on Burundi in an early kickoff whereas hosts Uganda take on Rwanda.

In an address to the media on Tuesday, George Lutalo the head coach of the Crested Cranes said that the team is ready to face the opposition and expressed their need to start on a high.

“My players are in good shape and ready for the Championship. We are aware every team has come with targets and equally we have set ourselves a target of achieving the best. Therefore, we want to start the first game on a high,” he said

Lutalo added that the tournament is also a preparation group for the 2022 AWCON scheduled to happen in July.

The Crested Cranes Captain for this tournament, Shadia Nankya said that the team has been preparing well for sometime and she believes they are all ready for the tournament.

“We have been preparing for sometime now and I believe everyone is geared towards the tournament. We definitely cannot wait for the games to begin and we are all working towards achieving the target of lifting the Championship.”

The last time the two teams faced off was in 2018 and the game ended in a two all draw. Nankya believes there are scores to settle and all they need is to win today.
