Uganda to mark World Vitiligo Day

Uganda will join the rest of the world on Saturday 25th, June 2022 to mark the World Vitiligo Day.

The day has been celebrated around the world since 2011, but this will be the first time for Uganda through the Vitiligo Associationof Uganda.

According to a communique released by the body, the inaugural celebrations will be open by a match around the capital Kampala, followed by a function in a bid to tackle stigma.

Vivian Najjuka who is the chairperson of the association said the celebrations will help them set in motion a campaign to tackle misconceptions, beliefs and myths surrounding the disease.

“Day initiatives aim to generate awareness of vitiligo, its appropriate care and treatment methods amongst the general public, health care providers, and to raise funds needed for research, mass sensitization and advocacy.” Najjuka stated.

Vitiligo, a common depigmenting skin disorder, has an estimated prevalence of 0.5-2% of the population worldwide. The disease is characterized by the selective loss of melanocytes which results in typical nonscaly, chalky-white macules.
