Long-distance runner, Jacob Kiplimo has secured a second medal for Uganda three days after Victor Kiplagati’s win gave the east African land locked country it’s first medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Uganda’s Kiplimo endured a stern competition from Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo in a race that broke gold medallist Joshua Cheptegei’s 27:27.43 10,000m record with a stunning 27:09:19 during the men’s 10,000m final at the Alexander Stadium on day five of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, on Tuesday 2, August 2022.
Kiplimo was the fastest in the 12 men field, the jubilant 21 year old could not hide the excitement. “I am very excited today I knew I would win because I saw the pace was a little bit slow,” said Kiplimo shortly after the win.
Kiplimo’s victory is a plus for Uganda’s commonwealth Gold medal capture after Victor Kiplagati’s win on Saturday 30th July 2022.
Uganda has won this race since 2006. In 2018, Joshua Cheptegei won Gold in Gold Coast following Moses Kipsiro’s remarkable 2014-Glasgow and 2010-New Delhi wins. In 2006, Boniface Kiprop garnered Gold for Uganda in Melbourne.
Uganda stands at the 12th position with only 2 gold medals beating Kenya, their closest east African counterparts who are in the 18th position with 2 silver medals and 2 bronze.
Australia is in position number one with 106 medals so far followed by England with 86 medals.
