NRM’s Mujungu wins Busongora south MP seat

Thembo Gideon Mujungu of National Resistance Movement-NRM has won the Busongora County South MP seat beating five others.

Mujungu was declared winner Thursday evening following a highly contested race in the Chwezi land. “Accordingly, as the returning officer for Kasese electoral district and in accordance with section 58(1)of the parliamentary elections act, 2005(as amended), I declare Thembo Gideon Mujungu who has obtained the largest number of votes to be the elected candidate for the Busongora County South constituency,” said Atwijukire Ismeail Takih, The returning officer, amidst tight security.

Mujungu won with a whooping 12,088 votes, followed by National Unity Platform’s Mbaju Jackson who garnered 6,866 votes. Forum for Democratic Change’s Kighema Alozious Baguma came in third with 5,564 votes whereas independent candidate, Mulindwa David Isimbwa polled 2,094 votes. Businge Benadet of DP and independent candidate, Izagiire Doreen trailed in with 84 and 34 respectively.

Of the 27,126 ballot papers counted, 399 were invalid, 32 were spoilt ballot papers and 26,727 were the valid votes cast for the candidates.

The Busongora South MP seat fell vacant following a court ruling that annulled Thembo Gideon Mujungu’s 2021 election victory citing irregularities.“dead people were allowed to participate in the January 2021 legislative poll,” reads part of the ruling .

Two days to the election, independent candidate Juma Munezero, pulled out of the race and rallied behind the National Resistance Movement candidate, Mr Gideon Thembo Mujungu.
