Breaking Tradition: Gen Tumwine’s body won’t lie in state

Body of the Late General Elly Tumwine will not lie in state at Parliament, UPDF Spokesperson Brig Felix Kulayigye confirmed the development on Monday.

Tumwine who served in the august house for 34 solid years representing the UPDF will not receive a final tour of Parliament.

Kulaigye revealed they were advised not to take the deceased’s body to parliament but did not reveal the source of the order.

Members of the family, relatives and friends were in attendance of a vigil yesterday on Sunday at the deceased’s home Nakasero, where eulogies and last moments with the fallen four-star General were shared.

Official payers are underway (by press time) at the Independence grounds in Kololo where President Museveni is in attendance.

The body is expected to be flown to Rwemikoma in Kazo District ahead of the burial tomorrow per the official program released by Minister for ICT, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi.

Tumwine succumbed to lung cancer related complications the previous week in Nairobi, Kenya.
