Youth urged to abstain from sex amid spike in HIV infections

Entebbe Municipality Deputy Mayor, Charles Kabwama has encouraged young men and women to delay their sexual debut and instead focus on their studies in order to secure their future.

Kabwama said Thursday during the commemoration of World AIDS Day. In his message, he said the youth are the future leaders of the country, and therefore a healthy generation of young people to take the country forward is needed.

Kabwama also castigated men who inflict violence on women and children and also spoke out against “blessers” and “sugar daddies” who prey on vulnerable young girls, exploit them sexually and infect them with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Elsewhere, the country marked World AIDS Day in Rukungiri District. The function was presided over by President Yoweri Museveni. The president asked young people to avoid making reckless decisions and lifestyles in order to live longer lives.

Earlier this week, Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) Director, Prof. Pontiano Kaleebu said the journey to finding the vaccine for HIV is still long owing to the complex nature of the virus which mutates very often.

According to the Uganda Aids Commission (UAC), about 1.4 million people in Uganda are living with HIV/Aids. About 54,000 people contract HIV every year, the majority of whom are adolescent girls, boys, and young women.

Statistics from the Aids body also indicate that 17,000 people in the country die of HIV/Aids annually, majority of whom are men who seek HIV treatment and care late. The 17,000 deaths per year is higher than the 2025 target of less than 10,000 deaths per year.
