Prison warder killed in Karamoja militia attacks

Uganda Prisons Service Spokesperson Frank Baine has revealed that a warder attached to the Kitgum Orom-Tikau Prison was on Friday 1st October attacked and murdered by a suspected militia group.

The Warder identified as Mukunya David, service number 15568 was reportedly attacked by members of the Karacuna Warriors whilst he was inspecting his cotton Farm according to Baine.

Baine said on Monday that the deceased’s body was recovered on Saturday after his wife reported him missing, he was found with his throat slit and left with all his belongings ruling out a possible robbery.

He also revealed that similar attacks were recorded in Kotido District where another Warder was shot in his thigh but was rescued by fellow Warders and is currently hospitalised at Kotido Health Center.

However, according to Frank Baine, the attacks are not in any way connected to the Moroto Prison Break of 2020, in which 219 prisoners escaped.

“We have been able to rearrest 97 prisoners of the 219 that escaped from Moroto last year, we are still on the hunt for the others and we hope to bring them to book soon,” Baine said

Maine also indicated that Uganda Prisons Service is closely working with other security agencies to investigate the attacks.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Karamoja affairs has embarked on a disarmament campaign in the region and have so far recovered 50 guns from cattle keepers.
