Man Killed in attempted Masanafu Police Arson

The Territorial Police at Old Kampala are investigating circumstances surrounding an incident in which a man attempted to set a fire on Masanafu police post on Tuesday, 10th January 2023.

It is alleged that officers were manning the station for the night shift at around 23:50 hours when a man was noticed approaching with a 2-litre water bottle containing an unknown substance. Asked the intent of coming to the station, he is reported to have poured the substance and set a fire.

According to the Deputy Spokesperson of the Kampala Metropolitan Police ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the man got burnt in the process and ran towards the officers among whom one shoot at him before he was rushed to Mulago hospital from where he succumbed to the injuries.

Owoyesigire revealed that a team of investigation officers arrived at the scene and picked the 2-litre bottle and a matchbox he used to start the fire to help in the investigation to ascertain his motives.

A phone and a photocopy of a National ID in the names of Kintu Charles Bazil have been recovered from him and will aid the ongoing investigations on whether he is part of the gang that has been attacking Police stations or not.

Uganda Police has over the recent past registered a series of attacks on police posts and other security facilities by unknown assailants during which several enforcers have lost their lives and assortments of ammunitions.

A suspected head of the terror group ADF behind the spate of attacks identified as Ali Katende alias Mao, was arrested in December last year but no reports have been released by police after 16 days of investigation.
