The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) is set to spend a total of UGX 6.9 billion on the election of new leaders across the country.
The council last held elections in 2012, and the tenure of the council expires in 2022. Elections for the Mufti we’re last held in 2001.
According to the UMSC spokesperson Ashraf Zziwa, the funds needed rely solely on the donations of Muslims and well-wishers.
Zziwa revealed that UMSC does not have the required funding to have the elections, however the council must abide by the body’s Constitution.
The required funds will carter for administrative costs, civic education, office requirements and stationery to register successful elections.
However, the current budget is pending approval from the executive, and as well the ongoing amendment of the current constitution which may call off the elections.
As of today, Muslims in the country are led by two rather parallel bodies, one based in Kibuli with the UMSC headquarters in old Kampala.
