open door refugee policy. During the 2 nd world war, many Poles sought refuge in various areas
across Africa and about 7000, most of them women and children settled in Nyabyeyea and Koja
in Mukono.
Between 1943- 1945, Polish women, rooted in their Catholic faith, built a church that is still
standing and in use. The church and cemetery at Nyabyeya draw in Polish people who come to
learn about the history and those yearning to trace the resting place of their forefathers.

of Poles who built a church that remains popular with the community to this day. 45 minutes’
