Former Nigerian Super Eagles star, Emmanuel Amunike claims that Algeria are the favorites to win the forthcoming 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Algeria are looking to join a prestigious shortlist of teams who successfully defended their Africa Cup of Nations title.
According to the 1994 Afcon title winner with the Super Eagles and Tanzania’s head coach in the 2019 edition, Algeria may win the title again.
“Algeria is the reigning champions, and they are the favorites,” Amunike said before adding.
“Senegal is a very strong team, so are the hosts Cameroon, Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco and Tunisia.”
“It will be very difficult to predict who will win the title because we have so many great teams here.”
“There are big changes in African football, players with a global dimension, it is promising.”
“In Europe today, African footballers play the leading roles in their clubs and evolve in the top clubs in the world. That must be reflected in this competition,” he added.
Algeria will rely on star players like Riyad Mahrez, Ismail Bennacer, Islam Slimani among others if they are to defend the title.
The Desert Foxes are also targeting their third Afcon title after winning it in 1990 and 2019.
In their recent friendly game against Ghana, Algeria registered a comfortable 3-0 victory at the Education City Stadium in Qatar on Wednesday.
Adam Ounas, Islam Slimani and Jonathan Mensah’s own goal were the only difference as the Desser Foxes suffocated the Black Stars.
