AFCON 2021: Côte d’Ivoire eyes knockout stage as they take on Sierra Leone

Cote d’Ivoire will be seeking victory that could see them securing their Round of 16 ticket when they take on Sierra Leone at Douala Stadium on Sunday.

The Elephants defeated Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in their opening game meaning that a win on Sunday will secure a knockout spot for them.

Sierra Leone on the other hand, held champions Algeria to a shocking goalless draw in the opening game.

The last meeting between the two teams in AFCON finals saw Cote d’Ivoire winning 4-0 in Tunisia 1994.

The Leone Stars last won an AFCON game back in 1996, a 2-1 win over Burkina Faso in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Elsewhere, Algeria has no choice but to react after a disappointing goalless draw with Sierra Leone in their Group E opener.

When the holders enter Japoma Stadium in Douala they know that another setback could threaten their title defending campaign.

Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea are also seeking to react from their 1-0 defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in Match Day one.

Backed by a historic unbeaten streak, Algeria looked high favorites to beat Sierra Leone, returning to AFCON after 26 years of absence.

This will be the first encounter between Algeria and Equatorial Guinea at the Africa Cup of Nations.
