Ivorian striker Sebastien Haller claims that their aim is to emulate the 2015 performance and go on to win the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
However, Ivory Coast will have to first deal with Egypt on Wednesday in the Round of 16 if they are to win the title.
According to Haller, it was emotional for him when he played his first match for his country against Equatorial Guinea.
“In terms of emotion, it’s really special, to see such fervor among the players and the supporters, it’s immense,” Haller noted.
“AFCON is not played only as teams, but with millions of people behind us. I am very happy to take part in it.”
“We are not only 26 players. A lot of people believe in us, and we want to repeat the performances of 2015,” he added.
Haller highlighted that the Ivorian team is very likely to count on players who took part in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, when his country added its second star.
“It’s good to count on players who won the 2015 AFCON. They bring us a lot of experience. We want to go all the way like all the teams present here.”
“Egypt is a great football nation which is always present at these events, with genius players like Mo Salah. It is a knockout match that can be played over 90 minutes or more.”
“We are preparing for a tactical match which can also be closed,” he noted.
He however pointed out that there are no longer small teams in AFCON and each game counts.
