AFCON 23: Mato Late Strike Rescues Sinking Cranes

Tuesday March 28 | Results

Tanzania 0-1 Uganda

Rogers Mato scored at the death to rescue the sinking Uganda Cranes. The Cranes registered a hard-fought 1-0 win against Tanzania at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Farouk Miya laid a well-calculated through pass and Mato calmly placed the ball at the far post to beat Tanzania custodian Aisha Manula. It was the perfect response to the Taifa Stars who won the tie that was played earlier in Egypt last Friday.

The win brings back Uganda on the road hence breathing life in a dry log. Ugandans had lost hope to qualify for the upcoming AFCON hence calling for the head coach’s sacking. The three points take Cranes to four points, level with Tanzania.

Algeria at 12 points, has already qualified and the second spot will be up for grabs for whoever wins the race between the three group mates. Uganda is left with two games, a visit to Niger and a home tie against Algeria.

The game was brought to a standstill with seven minutes to play in the first stanza due to the shortage of lighting. After a long wait and discussion by officials, the game restarted despite a minimal change.

Howerver Uganda will forget all that and walk away happy with three points hence gaining hope to make it to the upcoming AFCON after missing out on the recent campaign.

How Uganda lined up

Uganda XI: Salim Magoola (Gk), Kenneth Semakula, Abdu Azizi Kayondo, Halidi Lwaliwa, Timothy Awany, Khalid Aucho, Bobosi Byaruhanga, Isma Mugulusi, Richard Basangwa, Emmanuel Okwi, Joseph Ochaya.
