Burundi edge Rwanda to book Semi-finals slot

Burundi put up a good performance to defeat Rwanda in a closely contested Group A encounter of the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship which is happening in Njeru.

Both teams displayed quality and gave the fans a good match but it was Burundi proved to be the better team on the day edging Rwanda 2-1.

Sandra Niyonkuru returned with the same quality she displayed in their first encounter against Djibouti and bagged a brace for Burundi while Rwanda got their consolation goal through Zawadi Usanase.

Niyonkuru broke the deadlock with arguably the best goal of the tournament so far.Scoring in the 17th minute.

Rwanda however fought back and equalised through Usanase 20 minutes later. She was quick to send a low drive past goalkeeper Ariella Umurerwa.

The game changer however came a quarter to fulltime when substitute Aniella Uwimana was fouled in the box and Burundi were awarded with a penalty.

Niyonkuru did no mistake putting the ball behind the net after sending goalkeeper Nyirabashyitsi the wrong way.

The result therefore meant Burundi joined Uganda as the two teams to qualify from Group A. The two have six points apiece and will face off in a top of the table clash on Sunday.

Djibouti and Rwanda who are already out will face off in their last encounter.
