Drugs worth UGX 114 million seized, 15 pharmacies closed by NDA

The National Drug Authority (NDA) has seized assorted drugs estimated at UGX 114,800,000 and closed 15 pharmacies that have been operating illegally during a two week long operation mounted in the Katonga Bay area.

The operation follows an advisory by NDA to 20 pharmacies in 11 districts including Kalangala, Kalungu, Mpigi, Masaka, Gomba, Butambala, Rakai, Bukomansimbi,Lwengo, Kyotera and Ssembabule, that were operating without licenses or supervising pharmacists.Only 5 of the 20 targeted pharmacies were able to meet the requirements.

According to NDA a total of 237 boxes of assorted drugs, including illegally imported and expired medicines were impounded.

A total of 15 suspects are currently being detained at different Police stations and will be charged with counts of operating a business without a license and unlawful possession of classified drugs which is contrary to the National Drug Policy and Authority Act Cap 206.
