Entebbe Junior Badminton tourney giving youngsters their shot at centre court

The 3rd Entebbe Internal Badminton Tournament held earlier this month has over the years provided young players with a taste of elite badminton.

The one-day competition held at Entebbe Institute Club saw at least 40 youngsters compete on the Municipality’s biggest stage.

The tournament is made up of three traditional badminton formats which include singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

According to Paralympic badminton player and coach, Ritah Asiimwe the tournament furnishes young players with the right exposure and improves their skills and confidence.

“Every year we get to see a new breed of players register progress and step up their game, playing at such a competitive level helps the youngsters to gain confidence and as well improve their game,” Asiimwe said.

Betty Apio who is the chairperson of the organising committee said they have been able to achieve the objectives of the tournament.

“The tournament progressed well with new talents exposed which is our objective of showcasing talented players so that they get clubs and education bursaries.” Apio said.

Entebbe Municipality Deputy Mayor, Charles Kabwama lauded the organisers for availing a platform to the young players and also pledged his full support toward Entebbe Badminton Club.

“This is a great initiative to have the children gathered together to play Badminton. Talents need to be developed and as leaders we promise to give the necessary support towards such programs.” Kabwama said.
