Residents of Guda landing site located in Entebbe Municipality on tuesday broke ground for the construction of three public stand-pipes in a bid to enhance extension of clean and cheap water.
The move follows an outcry by the locals to the municipal council earlier this year during a visit by Entebbe deputy mayor, Charles Kabwama and local faith based charity organization Life Saver Missionaries.
The landing site that is home to over 500 residents suffer lack of a proper toilets facility, access to clean water and lack of permanent housing facilities which makes life at the landing site extremely hard.
The grand breaking ceremony was proceeded by general cleaning and planting of a tree that was graced by the Entebbe deputy mayor and Buganda officials.
While launching this project at Guda landing site, Charles Kabwama the Entebbe deputy mayor revealed that the municipality is more challenged by health issues that why he is more in improving the people’s standards through contacting possible resources.
He also urged the residents to continue carrying out general cleanness of the landing site in away of avoiding killers diseases which are as a result poor sanitation.
During the same event, he also asked residents to go for Covid-19 vaccination as well as medical checkups to live a better and healthy life.
Rogers Kagoro the Entebbe NWSC Manager revealed that they decided to offer the landing site with three public stand pipes as part their Social CorporateResponsibilty (SCR) and well treated water to the community since the water from the lake is not that safe for human consumption.
He also said that they will provide this water at subsidised rate of 21 shillings per 20 liters of water and expect the operator to sell it at a cost which is not more than shs. 100/shillings.
“NWSC policy is clear, if you miss use the public stand pipes we can withhold it because it remains a property of the cooperation so we just contact the local council chairperson to trace us another person that can operate it in a proper way,” he added.
Jackie Mirembe the Kiwafu 2 Councillor at Entebbe Municipality was surprised to hear that the residents ate paying taxes yet the landing site is not gazetted, however she promised the locals that she’s going to follow up the issue so that they benefit in the taxes that are being levied on them.
On behalf of Life Saver Missionaries, Annet Lumonyo thanked the deputy mayor for being a bridge in way of empowering the community so that locals live a better life.
She concluded by appealing to the manager NWSC, to partner with them in this noble cause because many communities have the same problem.
