Five Eritrean players go AWOL from Camp

Five players of the Eritrea U20 Women squad went missing from their hotel in Jinja on Tuesday morning.

The Eritrean team is one of the six countries taking part in the ongoing CECAFA Women’s U20 Tournament.

“CECAFA has confirmed that five players have this morning disappeared from their hotel in Jinja, Uganda,” a letter to the media partly read.However, the names of the players have been withheld.

The tournament started on October 30, 2021, and ends on November 9 at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

However, the organiser has confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Police in Jinja which is set to spearhead the investigation.

Eritrea is set to face Uganda on Wednesday, November 3, in what will be their third game of the tournament having lost 1-0 and 5-0 to Tanzania and Ethiopia respectively.

On October 2, 2019, four male Eritrean players went missing during the CECAFA U20 Challenge Cup in Uganda.

It only remains a question to be answered whether the five ladies will be found and tracked down.

This is not the first time Eritrean national players have disappeared whilst on sporting duty in Uganda, the latest being 2019 where four members of the Eritrean U20 men’s team disappeared in similar fashion.
