Former Uganda Cranes Midfielder Azira appointed head coach of Brilla FC

United Soccer League Two (USL2) side Brilla FC have named Micheal Azira as their new coach.

The 35-year-old former Uganda Cranes midfielder has been handed the mantle following the departure of Matt Horth who recently accepted a new college coaching role.

“It is unfortunate that he [Horth] will not be able to lead the team this summer, but we wish him nothing but the best in this great opportunity for him and his family. Fortunately, we have Mike Azira ready to step into the role, and he is more than capable of leading us to make a run at the national championship this summer.” the club confirmed Tuesday on their official website.

“Azira assumes the head coaching role immediately, and the club will be announcing additions to the coaching staff in the coming days.”

Azira had been appointed Brilla’s first assistant coach after he officially retired from Football last December. He had earlier shut the door to his International career in 2021.

Azira is set to lead the team against Texas United on May 20 for the USL2 campaign opener.

Born in Kampala, Azira featured for Uganda Premier League giants SC Villa before moving to North America where he played for Brilla FC, Charleston Battery, Seattle Sounders, Chicago Fire, and Montreal Impact among other clubs.
