Fortportal, Budaka Accidents claim 26 lives, Police

Police on Wednesday 4th May 2022 confirmed 26 people had perished in two separate accidents, with several others sustaining injuries. One accident recorded at Sebitoli just a few minutes outside Fortportal town, while another was reported in Budaka along the Mbale-Tirinyi road.

A Bus registration number UBA 003S belonging to Link Bus Services en route to the capital Kampala from Fortportal veered off the road rolling over several times at Sebitoli approximately 2 kilometers from Fortportal.

According to Traffic and Road Safety Public Relation Officer, ASP Faridah Nampiima said the injured had been rushed to Buhinga Hospital for first aid services and the deceased were ferried to the same hospital pending postmortem. “Among the 20 confirmed deaths from the Fort-portal accident 13 were adults and 7 minors, but were yet to be identified. ” she stated

However the identities of the deceased and those injured were yet to be made public by the time of reporting.

The Budaka accident reported 6AM involving 3 motor vehicles has been attributed to over speeding. “The accident involved motor vehicles Reg no- UAT 995A (Raum) and UBH 437K (Toyota Hiace) and UBJ 676W (Toyota hiace). ” Police revealed

Police identified the 6 who died in the Budaka crash as David Mulabi, Fatima Namarome, Kurusum Nambafu, Isaka Kafero , and one unidentified male adult. The Budaka territorial police said there were two unidentified survivors whereas a one Saida Nandigobe sustained ‘serious injuries’.

On Wednesday evening Police said they were working around the clock to have the drivers of both Toyata Hiaces apprehended. The drivers have been on the run since.
