The Works and Transport Ministry has set up an alternative route to Masaka district via Lake Victoria.
This follows the collapse of the Katonga River Bridge along the Masaka-Kampala highway last week, forcing travelers to use the longer Mpigi-Butambala-Ssembabule route.
MV NODL-Victoria started operations on Monday, transporting travelers from Nakiwogo in Entebbe Municipality to Bukakata, Masaka and vice versa at a subsidized rate of UGX 15,000 and UGX 20,000. The number of travelers opting for the marine route is still very low owing to limited awareness.
According to Nation Oil Distributors Limited (NODL)’s Operations and Safety manager, Abubaker Bwanika the vessel is in excellent condition to render excellent services to Ugandans.
“The vessel sets off from Bukakata at 7 am in the morning to Nakiwogo, and leave Nakiwogo at 1 pm, this is intended to permit our passengers have enough time to travel to Masaka and further destinations on time,” Bwanika said.
MV NODL-Victoria will continue plying this route to permit the ongoing construction works to repair the damaged section of Masaka-Kampala road, unless the Ministry of Works and Transport endorses the route to become permanent.
