Government moves to prioritize Agriculture in Schools

Uganda shall hold her first ever National Agricultural Education Symposium (NAES) across secondary schools and Agriculture teaching institutes.

The symposium is organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Ministry of Education and Sports and UNAFFE will be held between 8th and 12th June, 2022.

The highlights of the symposium include making Agriculture a compulsory subject within the recently reviewed Lower Secondary School Curriculum, Uganda vision 2040, SDG 16 inclusivity approach to development, African vision 2063 and Ministry of Education and Sports strategic plan 2020 to 2025.

The event shall feature a number of activities including exhibition of new innovations in agriculture teaching and practice, essay writing on ones experience at the farm, school quiz on why agriculture should be taught in schools, poems on theme ‘farming for prosperous future,’ debate on the future of agriculture in Uganda by universities and tertiary institutions among others.

The symposium is focusing on students since 15 million children are in school making the biggest the biggest population of the youth. Various agriculture teaching universities, tertiary institutions and secondary schools are expected to participate in the event.
