A daylight fire raced through Makusa-Lwamunyo fishing village, Kigungu parish in Entebbe Municipality on Thursday morning. At least 200 temporary structures were burnt to the ground and no casualties.
Fire started from one of the shacks per the accounts of eye witnesses. Jane Nabukenya a resident of the area says they saw huge flames sprouting from one of the wooden structures at around 11 am.
John Ndugga, a resident and LC III councilor of Kigungu says that residents tried to stop the fire using water in vain.
“Fire fighters rushed to the scene but they were unable to reach the entire area due to lack of proper access routes, I believe the municipal council needs to go an extra mile and do a proper plan for the area to avoid similar incidents in the future,” Ndugga intimated.
Richard Ssekyondo, the LC III chairperson Entebbe Division B says they have to come up with a proper plan for the area and as well advocate for permanent housing structures for the residents in order to minimize future fires.
“We need to start mobilising for relief items for our people, many of them have lost their source of livelihood and property today. We shall need all the basics we can find, from food and beddings,” Ssekyondo noted.
Red Cross response team leader, Micheal Mpunge said they are on ground to assess the impact of the inferno to better understand how to respond to the disaster.
By press time, Police was yet to comment on the incident.
Similarly, In December 2021 fire ravaged at least 300 homes and shops at Kigungu landing-site.
