After the Ministry of Health instructed medical interns to resume their internships last month, Kabale Regional Referral Hospital has onboarded a total of 41 medical interns.
Dr. John Philbert Nyeko, the Director of Kabale Hospital revealed said the interns will contribute their expertise to the hospital over the course of one year, supporting the work of other medical professionals within the facility.
Dr. Nyeko made this announcement while addressing journalists on the hospital premises at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.
Dr. Nyeko stated that a total of 41 medical interns had reported for duty across various departments of the hospital. “Among them, are 5 intern pharmacists, 16 intern nurses, and 20 intern doctors,” he noted.
Dr. Nyeko mentioned that each intern would receive an allowance of shs1m (one million Ugandan shillings) per month. This financial support is intended to help them cover basic needs during the internship period.
The pre-interns had been on strike since the previous year, primarily due to concerns over their pay. Meanwhile, the interns were advocating for an increase in their monthly stipend to shs2.5m, in line with a directive from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
However, the Ministry of Health had communicated that they could only afford to provide a stipend of shs750,000.
In a statement released in June this year, the Ministry of Health explained their decision to recall the interns. This was reportedly on requests from some parents and pre-interns who wanted to begin their internships at their own expense.
