Scores of residents of Katabi Town Council in Wakiso District flocked the market yard at Abayita Ababiri along Entebbe road on Wednesday to get a share of the impounded immature fish.
The fish consignment weighing a total of 7 tonnes is part of the shipment that was seized by the Fisheries Directorate last month aboard four trucks en route to DR Congo reportedly from Kenya.
The fish distribution was sanctioned by the Magistrates Court in Entebbe after weeks of failed negotiations between Kenyan authorities, said owners of the fish and Ugandan Authorities.
According to Robert Wasajja, who led the distribution in Katabi, the move will help deter illegal fishing and malpractice on the lake.
“The lake needs time to heal from all the harm that has been done by man, I believe we can have fishing holidays to let the fish grow, the country loses a lot of money to fishing tendencies.” Wasajja said
Locals however blame the increased levels of illegal fishing on the increased invasion of migrant fishermen on Ugandan waters and laxity of enforcement forces to abate water crime.
