Matatu and cab operators in Katabi Town Council plying the Entebbe Expressway on Tuesday welcomed the move to work under one umbrella association, putting an end to the rivalry that has lasted for over 3 years.
The Town Council gazetted a temporary taxi park for cab taxi drivers at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic in order to promote employment in the area. About 70 cabs operate in the park.
Cab drivers that subscribe to a privately owned company Muwundo Ventures and Travel Way Operators Association have unanimously agreed to work under Entebbe Stages Conductors And Drivers Association (ESCADA).
The deal to merge the warring factions was brokered by the Katabi Town Council leadership with support from security personnel.
Katabi Mayor, Ronald Kalema says the emergence of the experienced ESCADA to help manage the park will promote harmony in the area and as well improve service delivery.
“If they get well organized, the fights will stop and they will be able to develop as a group and move forward, as leaders we shall be here to guide and advise,” he noted
Kalema has also urged taxi operators to set guidelines to follow and as well put their differences aside in order move forward.
Geoffrey Muganga, the Town clerk asked the operators not to denounce their former associations but organize themselves to benefit from government programmes.
Hood Walakira alias Chief Abiola, the head of ESCADA says they are to foster dialogue with leaders of both factions to develop clear guidelines for development.
