KCCA gets 12 acres of land for the dumping site

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has been granted access to the Menvu dumping site located in Nansana municipality.

This has been resolved in the engagement chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, in attendance of the minister of Local government, KCCA officials, the Ministry of Works delegates, Entebbe leaders, Nansana and Kira Municipality political heads, among others.

According to Ronald Kalema, the Katabi Town Council chairperson, KCCA is now allowed to dump their garbage at the Menvu dumping site that is located in Nansana municipality but is being managed by Kira Municipality for the next few months as they also plan for a long-term solution.

“They have all accepted that the period we have hosted Kampala’s garbage in Nkumba is enough because you know the challenges associated with that, this is the gateway of Uganda, the trucks are big and they go on littering garbage in the road, the area is very small and it’s also near the lake, so we can not accommodate that huge garbage,” he noted.

Justine Mbabazi, the Wakiso Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Fabrice Rulinda, Entebbe Municipality Mayor, Paddy Kakumba, and Ronald Kalema, the Katabi Town Council chairperson having a photo moment after the engagement at the Deputy Prime Minister’s office in Kampala.

Kalema, therefore, highlighted that Julius Mutebi Nsubuga, the Mayor of Kira Municipality, accepted to offer land worthy 12 acres in Menvu to rescue KCCA for the next three months, and the Ministry of Works also pledged to grade the roads that reach there with the technical team of Kampala Capital City Authority.

The Katabi Town Council boss also appealed to KCCA to at least manage compilation at the Nkumba landfill with their excavators as they had agreed before for continuous use because they are still using it as Katabi and Entebbe at large.

“For over 40 years the government has been in power hasn’t been thinking about garbage management, therefore this is a situation which has led them to wake up to see how they can manage this challenge so that can be one of the listed achievements over 40 years as they are exiting and we are coming,” he concluded.

Last week when Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago paid a visit to the Nkumba landfill, accepted the resolutions passed by the Katabi and Entebbe local leaders that included; grading of the road leading to the dumping site by KCCA to facilitate easy access, provision of a water bowser to regularly water the road and prevent dust pollution, deployment of excavators to the dumping site to manage waste compilation and enhance efficient waste disposal, reduce speed limits, and restrict entrance to the dumping site solely through Kasenyi Road, prohibiting access through Nkumba University and limiting the dumping period to one month to prevent prolonged environmental and health hazards.

KCCA started dumping garbage in Nkumba immediately after the Kiteezi catastrophe, which left many homeless and several dead at the beginning of this month.
