Female media personalities attending a symposium which was held on March 24, at Imperial Royale hotel in Kampala, stressed a need to leave their comfort zones, if they are to favourably compete with their male counterparts in the media industry.
Organised by the Uganda Media Women’s Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social development, the symposium attracted female journalists and other media personalities from both digital to the traditional media.
The 2022 report on The Gender in Uganda’s Media: An Analysis of Print News and Radio /Television Talk Show Content, which was produced by Uganda Media Women’s Association, it indicated that women visibility in Radio/Television talk shows and print news stories, the number still remains significantly low compared to the males.
Another report by ACFODE compiled in 2008 stated that female news writers were 13%, whereas 15% were photographers and 24% news anchors.
Margret Sentamu the Executive Director of Uganda Media Women’s Association, also a proprietor of Mama FM, says they still need to do much, so as to increase the number of women in the media at all levels, as a strategy of amplifying their voices and fair representation.
Sarah Kagingo, the Co-director of Soft Power news, an online media website, advised female journalists to leave comfort zones and fight for their space if women in media are to realize a meaningful percentage and proper portrayal in the news subjects.
A number of women in the media industry were recognised by the Uganda Media Women’s Association for their efforts in uplifting the female gender through their stories, programs and community initiatives.
