Yosiah Kato, 38, was taken into police custody for allegedly causing the death of his two-and-half-year-old daughter, Fortunate Akansasira.
The incident occurred when Kato allegedly nabbed his wife, Evelyn Kyosimire engaging in marital relations with another man at their home on August 5, 2023, at around 10:00 pm.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, Kato had returned home after spending time with friends at Omurushasha trading centre. He is reported to have confronted his wife, demanding to know the identity of the man with her.
Kyasimire is reported to have responded sarcastically telling Kato to go ahead and arrest the purported (other) lover if he (Kato) had a case to make.
According to Maate, Kato grabbed a nearby stick and attacked his wife from the bedroom. “Tragically, in the process, the stick struck and killed their innocent sleeping daughter,” narrated Maate. The suspect first escaped but later turned and handed himself over, at Kanungu police station on August 6, 2023.
The crime scene has been documented, and the deceased child’s body was taken to Mpungu Health Center 4 for postmortem examination while inquiries continue.
The murder case was registered at Kanungu District police station under reference number CRB 526/2023.
