NIRA receives production equipment ahead of mass ID renewal

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) on Monday, 31st March, received production equipment for printing National Identification Cards as the country is set to kick off the mass National Identification update and validation exercise.

While receiving the equipment at Entebbe International Airport – cargo station, Peter Okwalinga from the Public Relations Department – NIRA, highlighted that the equipment is set to print at least 3000 IDs per hour, which is NIRA’s target to improve the turn-around time to address the issue of delays during the validation exercise.

“Our target is to improve the turn-around time since it has been one of the challenges we have been facing here that IDs delay,” he said.

Okwalinga also noted that this follows the consignments that the government agency received just a month ago for kits which have been already deployed in the field.

“We have trained at least 10,000 registration assistants and registration officers to register Ugandans at the parish level. In this exercise, we are doing two forms including mass enrollment and carrying out certain updates,” he highlighted.

Okwalinga, therefore, urged the public to embrace the update and validation exercise that is set to kick off soon, to enable eligible Ugandans to obtain National Identity cards as required by the Registration of Persons Act of 2015.
