The State House Anti-Corruption Unit, together with other security agencies, have made a search at Bep auto garage in Entebbe, of which 40 metallic boxes were found, with some containing suspected counterfeit US dollars amounting to around $2m.
According to Kennedy Odongkara, the Communication officer of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), they received a tip-off about a consignment that was suspiciously being held at Entebbe International Airport during May and October 2024.
“Since then, SH-ACU, together with other intelligence agencies, have been monitoring the consignment closely and were tipped off when the consignment was smuggled out of the airport to a certain garage in Entebbe,” he explained.
Together with invited representatives from civil aviation security, Entebbe police, local leaders, and neighbors, SH-ACU searched the said garage of which some of the 40 metallic boxes were found loaded with soil to make them heavy to hoodwink their would-be targets.
Among other items recovered were well-wrapped boxes that appeared as if carrying goods in transit yet containing useless items, including empty crates of beer and soda.
So far, three suspects have been arrested, while efforts to apprehend others are ongoing.
The head of SH-ACU, Brig Gen Henry Isoke, reiterated the unit’s determination in coordination with other sister agencies to crack down on criminals who target innocent citizens and foreigners to extort from them colossal sums of money through fraudulent and fake transactions.
