Policeman commits Suicide at UWEC

A police constable attached to the Counter Terrorism Police was discovered dead lying in a pool of blood along the lake shore at Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) in Entebbe on Sunday morning.

The deceased identified as Sadik Kawu was discovered at around 6am by another constable who together they were working night duty after he had disappeared from him for hours. Kawu’s body was found facing upwards with his gun pointed to his throat and cocked with one bullet in the chamber.

The Scenes of Crime department was called to document the scene and the body conveyed to Mulago Hospital mortuary for Postmortem.

Police is currently investigating a suspected suicide vide CRB 725/2022.

A source privy to the investigation intimated to Gateway News that Kawu had just returned from a two weeks long suspension and he was deployed on night duty at UWEC. The source however did not disclose the reason for the deceased’s suspension.

Other sources within Police revealed to our reporter that there is a possibility of murder. “He was murdered in cold blood during the first week of duty at UWEC night shift guard,” a source stated

UWEC spokesperson, Eric Ntalo said Monday the incident is ‘shocking’ and this is the first time for this to happen at the Centre. “As an institution that prioritises the safety of the animals, visitors and staff we are saddened because safety is our number one priority, but we are glad that police is committed to conducting a thorough and expeditious investigation to the death of the officer.” he said
