Police in Rukungiri is investigating circumstances under which a priest’s wife perished in a motorcycle accident along Katabushera hill in Bugangari Sub-county on September 26th, 2022.
The deceased has been identified as Irene Akankwatsa, 46, a resident of Omukamuri cell Nyamayenje ward southern Division Rukungiri municipality and wife to Rev. Benson Akankwatsa of Kitazigurukwa C.O.U.
According to an eye witness, the cyclist was heading to Bugangari when he lost control attempting to dodge a car that was coming from the opposite direction, surviving a bead-on collusion.
It is in the process that Irene jumped off the motorcycle and got her head shattered, dying instantly. The bodaboda cyclist rammed into a trench surviving with life threatening injuries.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson confirmed the incident involving a Bajaj Boxer registration No. UFE 774F.
Maate told journalists that the deceased has been working with Compassion International Bugangari, adding that, “Our team of experts was at the scene, combed all necessary evidence and we are working closely with eye witnesses to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.”
The deceased’s body was conveyed to Rwakabengo health center for a postmortem and the cyclist rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Involved motorcycle has been impounded at Rukungiri Central Police Station pending IOV inspection as investigations continue.
According to the annual police crime report 2021, there was a 42% increase in the number of crashes from 12,249 in 2020 to 17,443 in 2021.
During the period under review, 3,757 crashes were fatal, and 4,616 were minor.
There were 18,305 casualties from crashes in 2021, a reduction of 11%. Persons killed reduced by 6%, persons seriously injured reduced by 13%, and those that sustained minor injuries reduced by 17%.
