Primary 4 pupil commits suicide

Parents of 11 year old Kasule Arafat, residents of Mpigi district were in shock after finding their 11 year old son’s lifeless body hanging on a rope.

Kasule was a primary four pupil at Kabira UMEA Primary School.

According to sources, the deceased went missing last week on Wednesday, 14th September. He reported to school at around 8 am but dodged classes and disappeared from the school premises.

On notification, both the parents and the school mounted a search only to find his lifeless body hanging on a mango tree at St. Luke Catholic Church, a few metres away from the school.

Police was called in and they conveyed the body to Gombe hospital for a postmortem.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the youngster committed suicide.

Police is working closesly with relevant authorities to ascertain circumstances under which the 11 year old could have committed suicide not leaving out other possibilities.

Police spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga confirmed the incidence yesterday, “Our team was at the scene, we are still investigating the case. We want to establish all circumstances surrounding the incidence before we can be sure whether it is suicide or murder. We will engage parents, siblings, classmates, and neighbours where necessary for fact finding.”

Police has urged parents and local leaders to watch out for children most especially in these post-COVID times adding that COVID-19 left everyone traumatized.

Most teenage suicides have in recent times been attributed to the pressure for academic performance and mental health related issues such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders or insomnia.
