Rotary Clubs donate to Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida children

The Rotary Clubs of Muyenga and Bunga together with the Victoria University Rotaract Club delivered support towards children living with Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida complications in Entebbe.

They also had a charity walk around Entebbe Municipality in a bid to raise awareness for the condition and also to mark the hydrocephalus awareness week of 2022.

The support worth millions of shillings was delivered on Sunday (30th, October 2022) to the Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Initiative (HSI). The Initiative provides rehabilitation and healthcare to over 72 children living with the condition.

The donation comprising a wheel chair, food items among other necessities was received by HSI founder, Patience Mbabazi. “The donation has come at the right time as we continue to spread awareness and sensitize parents on how to care for children with these complications, we are grateful for the support from our friends from Rotary,” she said

Mbabazi said HSI will continue to lobby for better and more inclusive healthcare services and rehabilitation facilities for children living with the disease.

While handing over the items, Muyenga Rotary Club President, Cynthia Baitwa revealed they’re considering making the charity walk annual to increase awareness of the disease and us well rally support HSI.

Baitwa also appreciated parents for standing up with their children and also urged the public to not discriminate against such people with the disease. “Hydrocephalus is one of the programs we look at mostly through sensitization gatherings and we hope to continue supporting the initialative in all possible means,” she added.

About Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida:

Hydrocephalus is also called “water on the brain”. This “water” is actually cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), which is produced by the brain, and surrounds it, for instance to protect it against trauma.

Spina bifida is a congenital condition, which means that it has developed during pregnancy and is present at birth. The words spina bifida literally mean “split spine”, as during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy and onwards, the neural tube and spine will not have developed correctly.
