Rukiga district leaders task government over absence of Resident Magistrate

Leaders in Rukiga district have raised concerns over lack of a Court of a Resident Magistrate forcing a number of people to trek long distances to the neighbouring Kabale district for services.

This was revealed by the Rukiga district chairperson Robert Kakwerere during the Rukiga district Baraza meeting held on Wednesday at Nyikunama grounds, Muhanga Town council in Rukiga district.

According to the district boss, lack of a Resident court in the district has forced a number of people to lose cases in courts due to lack of money for daily transportation to and from courts of law in Kabale.

He added that the district being independent, would be having at least a resident magistrate to offer justice services. He thus called upon the government to work towards giving them an independent Resident Court.

Responding to the request, the State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister for the Luweero Triangle Alice Karamuzi Kaboyo who was the guest of honor, said the government is looking at addressing the problem starting with the recruitment of more judges, and after it will look at establishing courts of law in the new districts.

The DPC Rukiga district SP Hussein Niwagaba confirmed that on a weekly basis, either on Monday or Tuesday, they are forced to drive a 45km distance transporting over 10 prisoners to Courts in Kabale which he says, is costly to the department.

He added that if a court is established in the district, it would help to dicongest prison cells as the Police would then, easily present prisoners on a daily basis to the court hence addressing the challenge.

The Rukiga district Baraza meeting was spearheaded by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Zadoch Tumisime, attended by the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) John Asiimwe, district speaker Oscar Akampurira and the LC III, II, and I Chairpersons among others.

Rukiga district is an independent district which was carved from Kabale district in 2017 and according to the leaders, it should be independent in delivering services to the communities through its sectors like Education, Healthy, among other.
