The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi said Wednesday that the prevailing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is directly hindering economic recovery after the corona virus pandemic.
Amongi said this while delivering her address at the 2022 International Labour Conference (ILC) of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
“The Russia-Ukraine conflict is undermining global reconstruction and recovery agenda, disrupting economic activity and also causing job losses.” she noted.
The minister further urged global economic leaders to unite and address the unemployment crisis through a comprehensive agenda. “The path to recovery of growth with jobs calls for both domestic and global efforts.” she stated.
Amongi revealed that Uganda is taking huge strides in fostering economic harmony by promoting apprenticeship programs, extending financial grants to unemployed households, provision of low interest credit support to farmers and women.
She also revealed that Uganda is prepared to encompass new ideas to diversify and resuscitate the ailing economy after the corona virus ruins.
According to data availed by ILO, at least 112 million full-time jobs have been lost through the Covid-19 pandemic.
About ILO and the ILC
Established in1919, ILO is the only tripartite U.N. agency which brings together governments, employers and workers of 187 member States, to set labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes promoting decent work for all women and men.
The International Labour Conference (ILC) sets the international labour standards and the broad policies of the ILO. It meets annually in Geneva. Often called an international parliament of labour, the Conference is also a forum for discussion of key social and labour questions. Each member State is represented by government’s, employers’ and workers’ delegates.
