Gaddafi FC concluded the first round of the Star Times Uganda Premier League with a 1-0 victory against Wakiso Giants at Gaddafi Arena on Friday evening.
Yunus Sibira’s late header guided the soldier boys to a hard fought win against the wasteful Purple Sharks in an end to end encounter.
As early as the eighth minute, experienced striker Alex Kitata missed a chance to place the hosts in the lead with only Wakiso Giants custodian Samson Kirya left to beat.
Twelve minutes later, shot-stopper Kirya was called to pull off double saves off Gaddafi’s freekick shortly after Kitata was fouled a few yards away from the area.
In the 24th minute, Peter Onen was forced to make an early substitution, introducing Ronald Bithum for the injured Faisal Muwawu.
Three minutes to play in the first stanza, Moses Aliro came close in Wakiso Giants’ best chance however his effort missed the target by inches.
After recess, Davis Bukomba came on for Sula Mpanga as the hosts searched for feet in the final third.
Joshua Lubwama came close through a powerful freekick but Gaddafi’s custodian Ronald Mutebi was equally good punching away the effort.
In added time, Sibira nodded the ball in the back of the net in the last-minute to award the hosts all three points.
The result takes Gaddafi to seventh on the 16-team log with 21 points after 15 games while Wakiso are a position ahead 24 points.
Wakiso Giants will start the second round hosting Vipers SC at Kyabaggu Stadium, Wakissha on Tuesday February 1 while Gaddafi will host KCCA on Friday.
