Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has introduced new car parking charges at Entebbe International Airport in a bid to enhance ongoing efforts for investment in upgrading facilities for a better passenger experience.
The revised car parking rates are scheduled to be implemented at the airport starting on Friday, 1st November 2024.
According to the UCAA’s director general, Fred K. Bamwesigye, the new changes were reviewed by management and the board to reflect the current inflation trends, cost recovery, and investment into the airport facilities.
“In the Uganda Civil Aviation Act, the Civil Aviation Authority is given a mandate to run aviation and aviation facilities like airports, air navigation services, and other facilities in a business-like fashion; that’s why we are given a mandate to collect and spend money as well as making cost recovery. We are not a profit-making organisation. Therefore, we collect all revenues on the cost recovery basis,” he said.
In addition, the director general highlighted that there has been a need for changes in the rates due to changes in the inflation status since the current rates have been in place since 1st October 2009.
Bamwesigye also discouraged the public from parking vehicles for a long stay, saying, “We are absolutely not encouraging anybody to come and keep his/her car here as a place for parking forever or even for one month because it affects the daily users of the facility.”
New car parking fees;
For the short-stay parking, the first-hour charge for saloon cars and station wagons will be Uganda shillings five thousand (5,000/=), vans/minibusses will be charged Uganda shillings eight thousand (8,000/=), while lorries, trailers, trucks, and buses Uganda shillings ten thousand (10,000/=) for the first hour of parking. The rate for each extra hour remains Uganda shillings one thousand (1,000/=) for all categories of vehicles.
For long-term car parking, the first-day charge will be Uganda shillings thirty thousand (30,000/=) while additional days will remain at Uganda shillings ten thousand (10,000/=) per day. However, after 30 days of parking in the long-term car park, each the subsequent day will be charged Uganda shillings two hundred thousand (200,000/=) as
a deterrent.
The ideally recommended period to park in the long-term car park is not more than thirty (30) days.
Vianney Luggya, the CAA’s spokesperson, emphasized that rates for category A ( stakeholders of the airport including airport taxis cars, all office vehicles at the airport, CAA vans, and security vehicles) have stayed, not a single coin has been added on seasonal parkers for the month.
Recently, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has just unveiled two new state-of-the-art fire trucks in addition to the 2 other trucks that have been in place to enhance 3 the airport.
Entebbe International Airport is also under the upgrade and expansion project, which is standing at 94 percent overall, with the new terminal building, which is the major pending sub-component of the project, being at 74% and is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2025.
