Regional Media broadcasters have received a call for compliance with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).
The call was made during a one-day training session held at Lake View hotel, in Mbarara City, where Dr. Abdu Waswa, the head of UCC legal team, represented the Executive Director, Eng. Irene Kaggwa.
Dr. Waswa emphasised the importance of responsible broadcasting and urged media broadcasters not to use radio stations to spread hopelessness in Uganda. Instead, he encouraged them to disseminate accurate information, empower people, and restore hope through their airwaves.
During the training, Dr. Waswa also addressed gender inequality concerns within the media industry. He urged media personnel to provide equal employment opportunities for women, highlighting that some companies unjustly deny women a chance to explore their potential.
Another crucial aspect emphasised by Dr. Waswa was the importance of non-partisanship in journalism, especially during election periods. He urged media personnel not to divert people from important issues and core activities by becoming partisan themselves.
In addition to Dr. Waswa’s message, the Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Lt. Col. James Mwesigye commended media personnel for their potential to fight against corruption in Uganda.
He encouraged them to work in alignment with the Uganda Communications Commission guidelines, stressing the importance of responsible reporting and avoiding any abuse of people through their work.
Lt. Col. Mwesigye further advised media personnel to actively promote government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) through radio broadcasts.
The training session was attended by Station Directors, Managers, Producers, and technicians from various media outlets in Western and South-Western Uganda.
Dr. Waswa and Lt. Col. Mwesigye highlighted the importance of accurate information dissemination, empowering people, restoring hope, gender equality in employment, and non-partisanship in journalism. “By adhering to these principles, media broadcasters can play a vital role in promoting positive change within Ugandan society,” the duo noted.
