Uganda launches Personal Data Protection Portal

Government has finalized the operationalization of the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019, with the opening of the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) and the Data Protection and Privacy Portal.

The data protection and privacy portal was introduced on Monday, and the launch was graced by the Executive Director of NITA, the Digital Country Lead of UNCDF and the Minster for ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Chris Baryomunsi.

Joyce Ssebugwawo, the minister of state for Information Communication Technology launched the portal at the Media Centre in Kampala.

The portal is going to ease the registration of persons and organisations collecting and processing personal data.
The personal data that the agency seeks to protect includes information such as individual’s banking accounts, national identity number (NIN), passport numbers, and phone
numbers among others.

Richard Ndahiro, the Technical Advisor Inclusive Digital Economy, UNCDF, stated the launch of the portal was going to ensure that personal data does not fall into the wrong hands.
“It will address the potential risks that have come with digital transformation. Digital solutions are using a lot of data and the portal will enable the building of trust in the digital economy,” he stated

Aminah Zawedde, the permanent Secretary of the Ministry said that the launch made the rest of the portal available to the public , by providing convenient avenues, such as the portal itself through which individuals may file their complaints if they are concerned that their personal data protection rights have been infringed.

She furthermore stated that the ministry will be availing to the office the use of the available Government Broadcast media to furnish awareness. This is going to be additive to
the awareness campaign that had been launched.
“I am therefore pleased to further inform you that the Ministry will avail to the Office the use of the available Government broadcast media/platforms to further this awareness drive.” Zawedde said
