A section of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces(UPDF) headed by the Elite Special Forces Comand (SFC) took it to Mayor’s garden-Entebbe today 6th February 2023, in utter celebration of the historic Tarehe Sita.
As the main event presided over by President Yoweri Museveni took shape in Mbarara City, hundreds of Entebbe residents, local leaders and security agencies converged at Mayor’s garden in commemoration of the historical footprints of the liberation’s founders.
Under the theme ‘Recognizing the sacrifice of the founders of the People’s revolution for social economic transformation,’ celebrants walked close to a kilometer stretching from the Airforce base to Mayor’s Garden. Nakasero Blood bank was on ground for a blood donation drive as the 42nd Tarehe Sita celebrations climaxed.
Mayor Entebbe Municipality, Fabrice Rulinda noted that, “42 years are not just a number, they mean alot for us as a country, They mean the strides and they mean the journey that we have all taken as a country.”
“The fact that civilians and soldiers can co-exist and work together shows the progress we have made as a country.”He asserted.
Brig. Gen. Christopher Kasaija Commamder Entebbe- Airforce while addressing men and women in uniform said that, “The Force can afford all the equipment we need because our social economic status enables us to, our duty as UPDF has always been to ensure that there is an enabling environment for social economic transformation, there can never be progress without security.”
The main celebrant, Brig. Gen. Charity Bainebabo louded parents for allowing their children to join the UPDF an act that she says has helped keep the efforts of the revolutionary founders afloat. “The transformation of all of us here will in turn cause a transformation of Uganda as a whole. “As UPDF, we play a big role in the social economic transformation of Uganda, given the security we offer, business men and women are able to go about there errands.”
On 6th February every year, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces celebrate the Tarehe Sita. Tarehe Sita is a Swahili word that means the ‘sixth day’, which in this context 6 February 1981 when president Museveni and his Cohort embarked on the journey to liberate Uganda by lauching an offensive on Kabamba military barracks.
This day marked the official five-year war that eventually brought the National Resistance Army to power in early1986.
Over the past 42 years, Tarehe Sita celebrations have been a way for the UPDF to give back to the community and build strong relationships with the people of Uganda. The activities include the provision of clean water, cleaning of urban centres, tree planting, construction services and medical camps.
