WAFCON 2022: Crested Cranes Agonisingly Bow-out

Crested Cranes’s journey in the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations agonisingly came to an end after registering a 2-2 stalemate against ten-man Burkina Faso in their final group game.

Margaret Kunihira and Sandra Nabweteme were on target for Uganda while Congo Adama and Naomi Adele Kabre scored the two goals for Burkina Faso.

Uganda started the game with the right rhythm at it was evident that they had come into the game with guns blazing to pick a well-deserved result.

The challenge ahead of George Lutalo’s charges seemed even easier when Burkina Faso we’re reduced to ten players. However, none of the two sides was capable of untying the knot.

As early as eight minutes, Kunihira’s chilly ball went passed Burkina Faso’s keeper Mariam Ouattara capitalising from Shamirah Nalugya’s glorious through pass.

Fauzia Najjemba was sparking on the frontline causing Moudinatou Rouamba matching orders. This came after fouling the pacy forward.

Shamirah Nalugya found the chance to extend the lead after meeting a lose ball at the edge of the box but her first touch was far from that required.

In the 35th minute, Congo Adama passed through a forest of frozen bodies and calmly placed the ball passed Daisy Nakaziro to level matters for Burkina Faso.

Three minutes later, Nabweteme regained Uganda’s lead but Burkina Faso squared the game through Naomi Adele Kabre with four minutes to play in the first stanza.

After recess, Fazila Ikwaput and Aisha Nantongo paved way for Ritah Kivumbi and Lukia Namubiru as Uganda still searched for an edge.

Uganda created a number of chances to take the lead but none was converted meaning their stay at the big stage has come to an end.

The result means, Uganda finish at the bottom of Group A with one point from three games played.

In the other game played, Ghizlane’s second half penalty was enough to see off Senegal. The hosts led Group A with nine points from two games was Senegal followed in the second position.
